Wisdom: The World of Emotions is an adaptivesocial–emotional learning game offered by BetterKids for children aged 4–8. The app, available for iOS and Android devices, includes an SEL curriculum, SEL transitions, and SEL activities to support students’ emotional wellbeing. With both virtual and hands-on lesson versions, teachers can provide low-preparation, high-quality SEL instruction to their students, regardless of the classroom setting. Wisdom focuses on CASEL’s five core SEL competencies: self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and self-management. As they play Wisdom, children will focus on learning with augmented reality breathing and mindfulness, and identify emotions through facial expressions, body language, voice intonations, trigger events, and physiological reactions. They will also learn to express their feelings using newly acquired vocabulary, enabling them to resolve conflicts, regulate their emotions, and make responsible decisions. Parent prompts let students practice their new skills at home, and SchoolWork for iPad integration lets teachers monitor their students’ progress in real time. Cost: Free app, with options for in-app purchases; schoolwide licenses are also offered.
It takes a village to teach students with autism, but usually we only think of adults as making up that support community. Research continues to show that not only do students with autism respond better to interventions that are modeled by same-age neurotypical peers, but it also has positive benefits for those peers by increasing their empathy, advocacy, and leadership skills. Additionally, a community of students supporting their classmates with autism increases inclusivity and normalizes diversity, which can greatly impact the community’s emotional well-being.
