The Meeting House, in New York City, has created a new Virtual Playground where children can join together online with their real-world friends in an interactive space. The Playground is updated each day by adding original and curated content in diverse formats, including video, music, art, games, downloads, links, activities, yoga lessons, and storytelling. It also hosts live Meeting House Chats (referred to as “mChats”)—time to join together as a community and check in with each other through a virtual circle time that enables community members (“Juniors & School Kids,” “Teens”) to socialize and learn together in real time. Sessions are led by the organization’s professional staff and teaching artists, and will run for either 30- or 45-minute segments. Parents are invited to visit the Parent Time section, which offers professional advice on the many challenges and stresses that parents are facing today, as well as live parent support groups. Educators can also check out the section for a live educators support group.
It takes a village to teach students with autism, but usually we only think of adults as making up that support community. Research continues to show that not only do students with autism respond better to interventions that are modeled by same-age neurotypical peers, but it also has positive benefits for those peers by increasing their empathy, advocacy, and leadership skills. Additionally, a community of students supporting their classmates with autism increases inclusivity and normalizes diversity, which can greatly impact the community’s emotional well-being.
