Tool to Help Students Understand NATO and the Russia–Ukraine War

As they watch and read the news, students may hear the acronym NATO without understanding its meaning. Yet they have no doubt heard of countries inside and outside the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) from having watched international competitions such as the Olympics and the World Cup.

Students can learn about their country and NATO with the NATO on the Map tool, which has multiple layers of information accessible through the side navigation bar. They can also find photos, videos, and news articles on NATO’s activities, allies, and partners.

Students can explore NATO activities by selecting the layers “deterrence and defense,” “operations and missions,” or “projecting stability & fighting terrorism.” They can also learn about the members and partners of NATO by selecting the layers “NATO members” and “NATO partners” and clicking or tapping on a highlighted country.
