Teaching Young People About COVID-19
NPR has published a comic geared to children about the newly discovered coronavirus. The comic has also been published in Chinese and translated into other languages—and it is finding an audience in schools and libraries as well as in homes. The comic is based on a radio story that NPR education reporter Cory Turner did. He asked some experts what young people might want to know about the new coronavirus discovered in China. To make this comic, NPR used his interviews with Tara Powell at University of Illinois School of Social Work, Joy Osofsky at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, and Krystal Lewis at National Institute of Mental Health. NPR is offering, at no charge, a zine version of the comic, which can be printed and then folded; a YouTube video provides directions on how to fold a zine.

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) within the US Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES) recently found that 70 percent of public schools reported an increase in the number of students seeking mental health services at school since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, while roughly three-quarters (76 percent) of schools also reported an increase in staff voicing concerns about students exhibiting symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and trauma.
