The BookmarkED 2023 Book Club is a one-of-a-kind online experience bringing together authors and artists with K–12 teachers to explore literacy in a whole new way. The event will be held from July 1 to 22, 2023, and everything is online in a user-friendly community platform.
Teachers are invited to select from one of five books to read and receive up to 15 professional development hours upon submitting an arts-integrated lesson based on the book they chose when they registered. The book choices are Firebird by Misty Copeland (fiction: picture book, grades K–3), The Magic in Changing Your Stars by Leah Henderson (fiction, grades 3–7), Boundless by Chaunté Lowe (autobiography, grades 3–7), Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan (fiction: novel, grades 4–8), and Lights! Camera! Alice! by Mara Rockliff (nonfiction: picture book, grades 1–4). Each book has been carefully selected based on its content, illustrations, and/or cross-curricular connections.
BookmarkED will kick off with interviews from the authors of each book. Participants will hear insights and behind-the-scenes details about the book and the writing process, not shared anywhere else.
Coaching sessions will focus on discussion of the book and themes to share with students, sample arts-integration lesson ideas for the chosen book, and direct instruction for how to write an arts-integration lesson.
