Meta’s Engineer for the Week (EFTW) is a free program that introduces engineering to learners (aged 11–18) historically underrepresented in STEM. Over the course of 15 to 20 hours, learners work alongside adult facilitators to build technology prototypes that address a social issue of their choice.
Students can explore three projects: Chatbots for Change in which learners aged 13–18 build their own chatbot using artificial intelligence principles; Play for Impact, which engages learners aged 11–18 in creating a game with purpose using block-based coding; and Products with Purpose, in which learners aged 13–18 design, develop, and test a product prototype using everyday materials, such as cardboard and tape.
Engineer for the Week also offers learners the opportunity to speak with a Meta engineer through a one-hour video call. By engaging in the projects, learners will understand how to use the engineering process to collaboratively build a product. They will understand that engineers come from diverse backgrounds and have different abilities and interests. And they will understand that they have the power to develop solutions to issues that matter to them.
Students should submit their projects by one of the program’s deadlines: May 31, 2022; September 30, 2022; or January 31, 2023. All learners who complete EFTW will receive a Certificate of Completion issued by Meta and will be invited to attend any regional celebrations. They will also have the chance to have their projects entered to win Meta’s Impact Award, $1,000 to donate to a nonprofit of their choice.
