Project-based Computer Science Curriculum

Mobile Computer Science Principles (Mobile CSP) offers an Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) curriculum for students in grades 9–12 to learn computer science by building socially useful mobile apps. The Mobile CSP course uses the visual programming language MIT App Inventor to provide a rigorous, programming-based introduction to computer science through a project-based curriculum. In addition to teaching programming and computer science principles, the project-based course emphasizes writing, communication, collaboration, and creativity. A complete set of free, openly licensed Mobile CSP curricular and instructional materials are available online. Mobile CSP also offers a four-week summer Professional Development (PD) opportunity, with the next PD launching in the summer of 2017. The Mobile Computer Science Principles course satisfies all requirements of the College Board’s new AP Computer Science Principles course, designed to help broaden participation in computer science among high school girls and underrepresented minorities. Developed and piloted at Trinity College, Mobile CSP has now also partnered with the College of St. Scholastica.

Plus: App Inventor Concept Cards provide a quick way to learn new App Inventor code and concepts. Each of the 13 cards can be printed out, folded in half, and used to prompt students to explore a concept in App Inventor, such as timers, sounds, movement, math, multiple screens, and colors. These free cards are designed to introduce ideas to students in bite-sized snippets. They can be worked into any lesson or tutorial.
