K–12 students are invited to give engineering a try with the 2023 Engineering Challenge from Science Buddies. In the challenge, students use their problem-solving skills to design, build, and test contraptions, using simple materials. This year students are invited to make a device out of paper, string, tape, and paper clips to pick up a ping-pong ball and return it to a start line. What is the greatest distance over which their device can work? Elementary, middle, and high school challenges are available. Students can work individually or in teams of up to four students. Each student team should follow the challenge instructions to build and test their device. Teams may try the challenge as many times as they want but can only submit one score.
Participating teams will be entered in random prize drawings for ten $1,000 prizes. Random drawing prizes are not dependent on the team’s score. The prize money will be awarded to the team’s sponsoring school or nonprofit organization. A school or organization may receive a maximum of one prize. The more teams a school or organization submits scores for, the higher their odds of winning.
Deadline: Submissions will be accepted through March 19, 2023.
Discovery Education’sMystery Science inspires K–5 students to stay curious. Video-based, open-and-go core and mini lessons are driven by questions from real students, who guide the exploration of the world around them and inspire curiosity.
Every year invention education experts at the National Inventors Hall of Fame develop an all-new curriculum for Camp Invention. The curriculum is filled with hands-on experiences that provide an appropriate level of challenge for students across a range of learning levels in kindergarten through grade 6.
The Tech Interactive is a highly regarded science and technology center in San Jose, California. The museum offers more than two dozen lesson plans and related challenges that look at engineering through the lens of diverse subjects, from data science to English language arts to systems design.
