HiveClass is an app-based platform that offers guidance to children on how to play sports and improve as they progress through the app. The idea is to engage more children in active screen time—to get them moving rather than passively watching.
The app presents a variety of sports and other physical activities on the student’s device: basketball, dance, field hockey, fitness, lacrosse, self-defense, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. Athletes who specialize in particular sports guide students through professionally shot videos created with a curriculum-focused approach. All of the content—available in English and Spanish—can be accessed anywhere with an internet connection, via smartphone, tablet, laptop, or personal computer.
Hiveclass is offered in two formats—one for schools, the other for libraries. Schools get access to a wealth of digital content designed by a team of top physical educators and aligned with national standards as set forth by Shape America. Educators can track students’ progress and easily monitor performance and goals. Most of the content is presented in follow-along videos, with a set of questions and an SEL component to help students engage beyond the physical movement side of practice. The platform is built to be inclusive with content developed specifically for students with dyslexia, ADHD, or visual impairments. Students can also build Hive communities, or teams, and work through challenges as a group.
HiveClass works with school libraries across the US to provide these resources to students for free. The app’s Reading Hive feature lets libraries showcase relevant books that students may want to borrow to learn more about a specific area or skill.
