Vireo Education works in collaboration with educational institutions to train the eco-citizens of tomorrow. Vireo’s projects include all the equipment and seeds needed for hydroponic gardening, as well as access to Vireo’s digital platform with instructions related to gardening, ideas for use of the hydroponic garden, teacher resources, and other instructional materials. Vireo’s team is available to support and inspire teachers along the way.
With the Vireo hydroponic garden, educators can develop students’ analytical skills and critical thinking; focus on their wellbeing by practicing mindfulness; promote nutrition with healthful lunches made with the harvested vegetables; and develop students’ entrepreneurial skills by selling the products of their harvest. Teachers can try some of the projects displayed on Vireo’s website or create their own projects that will meet their students’ needs and ambitions.
Even as life returns to normal in a post-pandemic world, students and educators continue to grapple with the challenges of this once-in-a-lifetime situation. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) within the US Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES) recently found that 70 percent of public schools reported an increase in the number of students seeking mental health services at school since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, while roughly three-quarters (76 percent) of schools also reported an increase in staff voicing concerns about students exhibiting symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and trauma.
Where does our food come from? Who has access to healthful food? How is climate change affecting our food? How is climate change affecting our food? ProjectS.O.W. (Seeds of Wonder), a freecurriculum developed by Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), gives teachers ways to explore these issues with young people aged 13–19.
Letters to Strangers (L2S) is a student-led nonprofit organization focusing on students’ mental health by offering students opportunities to use their writing skills to pen letters expressing feelings and emotions they might otherwise avoid sharing.
