Exploration of Far Distant Lands Using the Power of Augmented Reality
Created by the Fossett Laboratory for Virtual Planetary Exploration at Washington University in St. Louis, the GeoXplorerapp for iOS and Android devices helps students understand the complex, three-dimensional nature of geologic structures. Rather than having to physically travel around the world to study specific geologic specimens, students can use GeoXplorer to browse thousands of 3D terrain models, learn about them, and view them in augmented reality just as they appear in the real world. Additionally, with the app’s natural gesture controls, students can rotate, resize, and manipulate the 3D models so they can easily “Xplore” small details. From Martian terrain samples collected by NASA to Devils Tower in Wyoming to rare hand samples too delicate to handle, the catalog of 3D models is constantly expanding. Cost: Free
