Created by the Chicago ArchitecturalFoundation,DiscoverDesign is an online platform where students, teachers, and mentors come together to design solutions for real-world challenges. The website serves as a “town square” where students can be inspired, learn from peers, and get feedback from design professionals. They can work on projects through a school or tackle challenges on their own, knowing that a network of designers on DiscoverDesign will support them. Teachers can use DiscoverDesign to guide students in solving problems using design thinking and 21st-century learning skills. They can assign existing challenges to students or create their own challenges. At each step of the design process, students post original photos, research findings, drawings, models, or video artifacts. DiscoverDesign is ideal for use in career and technical education classes and STEMcourses. Arts and humanities teachers will also find DiscoverDesign to be rigorous and relevant for cross-disciplinary and project-based learning. Architecture, engineering, and design professionals can volunteer as online mentors to provide feedback, jury competitions, and motivate design thinking through comments and discussion with students and teachers.
