Curriculum to Help Young Children Understand Climate Change
While curricula are available to help older children understand climate change, few education resources are geared toward early childhood. To help young children feel empowered in the face of climate change and anxiety, a Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) alum and early childhood educator, with guidance from an HGSE associate professor, has developed Earth Warriors—a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate, and scientifically accurate curriculum for young children.
The school curriculum currently has four subject-specific modules: (1) We Are Earth Warriors; (2) What Is Climate Change? (3) All About Waste; and (4) Community Project & Advocacy. Every year new modules will be added, and the curriculum will be updated based on scientific and pedagogical advances.
Schools purchase a yearly subscription to the curriculum. The subscription gives teachers access to the Earth Warriors portal, which has all the resources needed to implement the curriculum: teacher guides and overviews for each module, including subject-specific explanations and vocabulary, and 40 lesson plans for each age group with student activities and learning objectives. Earth Warrior teachers and students will also become part of a global community to connect likeminded teachers and youth around the world.
Three new early-literacy apps—released for free from Harvard Graduate School of Education and its Reach Every Reader initiative—are designed for parents and caregivers to use with their children to encourage fun and rewarding interactions, promote dialogue, and give children the foundations they need to read, learn, and thrive.
A team of school psychologists and researchers at University of Connecticut has developed a free program to get students to express their feelings or reduce anxiety. The science-backed program uses puppets in short videos to explain concepts and includes kits for students to create their own puppets.
The Oceans of Data Institute began as an initiative of the Learning and Teaching Division at Education Development Center (EDC). Over three years, the institute’s Preschool Data Collection and Analysisproject created and tested problem-solving activities for young children.
