Citizen-Science Projects Contributing to Real Discoveries
In 2007 the Adler Planetarium and Oxford University in the UK founded Zooniverse—the world’s largest platform for people-powered research. With more than 1.5 million registered users around the world, Zooniverse connects everyday citizens with researchers to help classify galaxies, find new planets, explore the surface of the Moon, and complete dozens of original projects in astronomy, biology, science, and the humanities. Teachers who want to use real data in their classrooms can tap one of the online Citizen-Science projects built at the Adler. On the Zooniverse website, they can browse a selection of lesson and activity ideas to get started using these projects. Students can also take the Zooniverse with them by downloading the app for iOS or Android mobile devices.
Plus: Students can help astronomers classify galaxies at Galaxy Zoo. After signing up for a group account using the Galaxy Zoo Navigator, they will learn about statistics by exploring data contained within their classifications. They can make histograms and scatter graphs to investigate the size, brightness, and distance of select galaxies.
