You Be The Chemist Challenge, sponsored by the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF), is an interactive academic contest that encourages students in grades 5–8 to explore chemistry concepts and their real-world applications. This academic competition starts at the school level and continues with local, state, and national competitions. The challenge begins with students completing the Challenge Qualifier, a short multiple-choice test. Qualified students will then participate in a local challenge, and a select number of students will advance to the next level of competition. Challenge competitions at the local and state levels are conducted in a quiz-bowl format, with several rounds of multiple-choice questions. Students who score the highest will move on to the next level, with the top participant from each state advancing to the national challenge in June. CEF also provides free study materials to help students prepare for the challenge. All national challenge participants will receive a nanotechnology kit, various giveaways, and a participation medal. The top four participants will receive educational scholarships intended for future higher-education expenses, ranging from $1,500 (fourth-place participant) to $12,000 (national challenge champion).
Deadlines: September 12, 2017, registration opens; February 3, 2018, registration closes; April 14, 2018, state challenge competitions take place; June 18, 2018, national challenge occurs
