Augmented-Reality Game Playing with Quarks and Particles
Using augmented-reality (AR) technology, the Quantum Rascals interactive AR puzzle game, by University of Southern Denmark, teaches students about quantum physics in a playful and innovative way. In the game, which is free to download on iOS and Android devices, students help Quantum Kate discover subatomic particles and become a true Quantum Rascal. Quantum Kate is the hero character of the Quantum Rascals universe, and she blogs about quantum physics in 12 languages on YouTube. From Kate’s room, students can access the portal to the quantum world and start the game. Colored particles called quarks will pop up into their room. Students can connect two or three quarks together by drawing strings between them with their phone and form new particles, but they need to be careful not to cross the strings. The more particles they discover, the more quarks they unlock. However, they will need to watch out for the quantum particles they created: they are unstable and will decay into more quarks. Students can find all the particles they discovered in the high-score poster back in Kate’s room. They can play the game again to beat their best score and discover all the subatomic particles to become a true Quantum Rascal. Cost: Free
The EcoTarium offers interactive, educator-led programs aligned to current science standards. Children in prekindergarten through grade 8 can join an EcoTarium educator live on Zoom and engage in science explorations on topics such as Animal Adaptations and Understanding Weather.
