App for Helping Scientists Study the Global Environment
Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) is an international science and education program that gives students and the public worldwide the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientificprocess, and contribute meaningfully to scientific understanding of Earth’s system. NASA’sGLOBE Observer app lets students make observations of Earth from the environment around them. The observations they collect and submit will help scientists better understand satellite data that NASA collects from space. The current version of the app, for Apple and Android phones, includes four capabilities: GLOBE Clouds allows observers to make regular observations of Earth’s cloud cover and compare their observations to NASA satellite observations. With GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Mapper, users can locate mosquito habitats, observe and identify mosquito larvae, and help reduce the potential threat of mosquito-borne disease. GLOBE Land Cover allows users to document, for example, the trees, grass, and buildings that are on land. And GLOBE Trees asks users to estimate a tree’s height by taking pictures of trees with their device and answering a few questions. The Clouds, Mosquito Habitat Mapper, Land Cover, and Trees tools are available in eleven languages. Additional capabilities may be added to the app in the future. Cost: Free app
The Covid-19 pandemic forced educators to make many changes in response to instant lockdowns and other unexpected pressures. But one thing educators who read Big Deal Media’s K-12 Technology newsletter didn’t have to change: their reliance on the newsletter as a valuable tool for finding and buying technology resources for their schools and districts.
