For many years, mathematicians, scientists, engineers, and others interested in mathematics have played “year games” via email and online. It may not always be possible to write expressions for all the numbers from 1 to 100 using only the digits in the current year, but it is fun to try to see how many students can find. This year may prove to be a challenge.
As with many games, the rules for the Year Game can vary slightly. Teachers may wish to use different rules in their classroom. This game, from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), is geared for students in grades 3–12 with a general knowledge of mathematics. Printable activity sheets are freely available for students to record their findings, as well as sheets of manipulatives that can also be printed. Additionally, teachers are invited to crowdsource solutions on the MyNCTM online community.
Carnegie Hall Kids is a child-friendly website that invites youth aged 5–12 to learn about music through activities that ignite children’s imagination. Through a fun and engaging interface, young people can learn about the history of Carnegie Hall, as well as explore a variety of musical genres and traditions.
ImmerseMe offers solo language practice in virtual reality. In each lesson, students will find themselves in a 360-degree photographic image filmed on location in a place where their language of choice is spoken.
Getting children to compose music has always been seen as difficult, a skill reserved for those who have mastered theory and acquired sufficient instrumental skill. With Hyperscore, children can express their innate musicianship literally in minutes, regardless of their level or prior music experience.
