Cool Down Spaces: Best Practices for Managing Challenging Behaviors

Parents and teachers can feel confused and uncomfortable when students shout, cry, or act in ways that appear developmentally or culturally inappropriate. It’s helpful to learn who you can turn to for training or advice on behavior management and it’s equally useful to learn a few strategies to help children regulate their emotions and, in turn, their behaviors.

Is Dated Technology Contributing to the Great Teacher Resignation?

Could upgrading the technology teachers use every day in their classrooms help make their work easier — and stem the tide of educators leaving school districts? According to some educational technology experts, it certainly can’t hurt.

The Educational Value of Inventors and Invention

It is never too early to encourage students to become problem-solvers. To identify a problem and use creativity to develop a solution is a lifelong skill that can be used in every facet of life. Inventing does just that. Learning about inventions in the past and understanding the process inventors go through to develop inventions helps students become critical thinkers and problem-solvers.

From CRT to RCT: The Urgent Case for Raising Critical Thinkers

I am completely unmoved by the debate over the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT) in schools. I fully understand that CRT is an esoteric theory that’s used in law school and doctoral programs as one of many frameworks of analyzing historic and present policies and phenomena. But I understand what people really mean when they argue that CRT should not be present in schools: schools should not talk about things that make children feel uncomfortable, like antiracism. Schools should not indoctrinate children or make them feel bad about what they learn in school, especially if school is teaching them to feel guilty about being the big, bad, evil, privileged white oppressor.

Enhanced Ebooks Are Making the Grade for Literacy

Children appear to be constantly connected to digital devices. The ability of smartphones, tablets, and game consoles to command attention and maintain engagement has not gone unnoticed by educators. As a result, digital learning tools are becoming increasingly prevalent in the classroom, helping teachers foster engagement, concentration, and comprehension.

Teacher Talk: The Road to Civility Starts With Civics

I say this sincerely and with urgency: teaching civics today is one of the most important things we can do to save humanity and restore civility.

Over the last 13 years, I’ve watched the civics classroom evolve from one in which teachers introduced simple lessons about government, presidents, the Constitution, citizenship (and what it means to be a responsible citizen), to a space where students wonder and are more curious about the world around them.

Using Peers to Support Children with Autism in the Classroom

It takes a village to teach students with autism, but usually we only think of adults as making up that support community. Research continues to show that not only do students with autism respond better to interventions that are modeled by same-age neurotypical peers, but it also has positive benefits for those peers by increasing their empathy, advocacy, and leadership skills. Additionally, a community of students supporting their classmates with autism increases inclusivity and normalizes diversity, which can greatly impact the community’s emotional well-being.
